October 21 – CPS All-Stars Tournament

Join us for our first in-person tournament taking place at Brooks High School. The All-Star tournament to K-12 grade students participating in the Academic Chess Program students. Registration by school coaches only. Registration deadline is October 11.

The tournament features 4 sections:

  • INTERMEDIATE [GRADES K-6]
  • JUNIOR HIGH [GRADES K-8]

October 9 – Season Opener Online Tournament

Join us for our Season Opener (Online Tournament) open to students in grades K-12 with 2 sections:

  • ELEMENTARY OPEN [GRADES K-6]5-ROUND INDIVIDUAL SWISS, G/15,+5
  • MS/HS OPEN [GRADES 7-12] 4-ROUND INDIVIDUAL SWISS, G/40,+5

Join tournament opens at 9:30 am and Round 1 starts at 10:00 am.

THIS TOURNAMENT WILL BE conducted ONLINE THROUGH CHESSKID.COM.

To participate in the tournament students must have their ChessKid account associated with our Enterprise Account 3 days prior to the tournament.

October 3 – ChessKid Webinar for Coaches

The Academic Chess team will host a virtual seminar covering the use of the ChessKid by coaches on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, time 5:00 – 6:00 PM via Zoom. This webinar is for CPS coaches to help you with using ChessKid in your classroom, managing your group of students, and answering your questions.

September 27 & 28- Webinar For Chess Parent

Join us for one of our virtual informational webinars for parents on Wednesday, September 27, or on Thursday, September 28, both from 5 – 6 PM via Zoom. Learn about the upcoming 2023-24 Academic Chess season, changes to this year’s program, and about this year’s tournaments being rated by the US Chess Federation. Each day is limited to 100 participants and will be the same presentation each day.

Participants are required to register in advance. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

To confirm your attendance at one of the meetings, please complete your registration no later than September 25, 2023.

September 20 – Virtual Coaches Meeting

Join us online for this year’s Academic Chess and Cops & Kids Coaches Meeting on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, from 4:30 – 6:30 PM via Zoom. Participants are required to register in advance for this meeting at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMuc-uhqT0sGNMs4UsOHNwECahawLpvWCzg. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

To confirm your attendance, please complete your registration no later than September 18, 2023. If you have multiple coaches attending the training, please make sure each one registers for the event.

If we reach our limit of 100 participants, we will schedule an additional coaches meeting.

All coaches are required to attend the coaches meeting or watch a video of the meeting that will be emailed out and posted on this website.

2023 – 2024 Academic Chess Forms & Tournament Regs

As we ramp up for the 2023-2024 chess season, we have published this year’s rules and regulations and this year’s Parental Permission Form that now includes a Student Data Sheet. All students in the Academic Chess program are required to complete this year’s permission form and data sheet. Coaches are required to collect these forms and have paper or electronic copies available at the tournaments.

All coaches need to complete the 2023-24 Coaches Contact Info Form

If your school has not already completed the applicable LOI, this needs to be done ASAP.

July 13 – Cops & Kids Summer Chess Tournament

Join us on Thursday July 13 from 10AM – 1PM for our Summer Chess Tournament open to students in grades 5-12 from schools that participate in the Cops & Kids Program.

The tournament will take place at Whitney Young high School on the cement area near the outdoor greenhouse on Jackson St. Students need to be dropped off after 9:30 AM and picked up by 1:30 PM. Lunch will be provided for the students.

Parents & coaches may register students for this event.

Chess Instructor Training Camp for HS Seniors

3-week Summer training program with Master Instructor Lamar Lockett. Camp runs June 26 – July 14, 9AM – 2PM, at Whitney Young High School.

In this camp you will be trained to become a chess instructor and a tournament director.

Graduates will receive assistance in getting a job as a chess coach at a local CPS school, assistance with getting hired with a local chess company, and will be added to the TD staff for CPS tournaments.

Aug 12-18 Pan American Youth Chess Championship

The XXXIII Pan American Youth Chess Festival Open and Girls is a 7-day non-CPS tournament that takes place from August 12-18 at McCormick Place. This is an international 9-round Swiss tournament open to players from all the countries in the Americas. – TOURNAMENT INFO

Students interested in playing in the tournament need to complete THE PAN-AM YOUTH INTEREST FORM by May 19. At this time, no other expenses will be covered.
