Our group 66 students arrived on Wednesday in our Nation’s capital to compete in this weekend’s US Chess High School National Championship. Before the students compete to see who this year’s national champions are, the students traveled to Baltimore to compete in a friendly match against the Baltimore Kid’s Chess League. They spent Thursday visiting Howard University and some of the cultural and historic sites in DC before playing in the Thursday night Blitz chess tournament.
The 11 schools that were selected represented a diversity of schools across the city including several Level 3 schools. 4 of the schools selected had never participated in a national Chess tournament before. The schools are Haley, Kinzie, Monroe, Decatur, Garcia HS, Jones HS, Lincoln Park HS, Payton HS, Solorio HS, Taft HS, and Englewood STEM HS.
